250 About the Author Michael Allen joined the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) as the majority staff director in January 2011.Prior to joining the HPSCI, he was director for the Bipartisan Policy Center’s successor to the 9/11 Commission, the National Security Preparedness Group, cochaired by former U.S. representative Lee Hamilton and former governor Tom Kean. Previously, he served in the White House for seven years in a variety of national security policy and legislative roles. At the National Security Council (NSC), Allen served as special assistant to the president and senior director for counterproliferation strategy from June 2007 to January 2009 under National Security Advisor Steve Hadley. From February 2005 to June 2007, he was the special assistant to the president and senior director for legislative affairs at the NSC. From December 2001 to February 2005, Allen worked in the legislative affairs office of the White House’s Homeland Security Council. At the beginning of the Bush administration, he worked in the Bureau of Legislative Affairs at the Department of State.
