Welcome to “My First MUN IX.” For most of you, this MUN Training Conference will be your introduction to Model United Nations, an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations agenda. Because “My First MUN IX” is a training conference for novice MUNers, there is only one topic up for discussion—cyber security/cyber warfare. As Model UN delegates , you will role-play as a diplomat representing either one of the UN’s 193member countries, or as the leader of an international corporation. At the conference, you will represent your country (or corporation) in a simulated UN committee session of the General Assembly. In advance of the conference, we ask that you do four things: (1) research your assigned country or corporation (your faculty advisor will know the countries/corporations assigned to your school); (2) write a one-minute statement of your country/corporation’s position on the topic (cyber security/cyber warfare) and bring it with you to the conference; (3) dress the part—western business attire (shirt and tie for young men and skirt and blouse/dress/pants suit for young women); and (4) come prepared to learn and practice the essential MUN skills of Internet research, writing position papers and resolutions , and public speaking. This conference consists of two main parts. The morning session consists of large group instruction on the essential knowledge and skills needed to do well at future MUN conferences. These morning sessions are presented by veterans of MUN, history and government teachers at Marshall High School, and experts in the field of foreign policy. The afternoon committee sessions will simulate what delegates can expect to encounter at competitive MUN conferences. Each delegate will represent a country or international corporation active in the field of cyber security. These small group sessions will be chaired by students active in the University of Virginia’s International Relations Organization (IRO).
