a note from the publisher Every person affected by the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Irene has a story. Some of these are simple tales of being inconvenienced by road closings or washed-out bridges. Others are tragic and life-changing: houses collapsed against the crush of brown water and debris, the topsoil of family farms replaced by stones and fine silt, near-death experiences or harrowing escapes, even the loss of loved ones. No single book could ever contain all these tales. Deluge tells a collective story of the flood through the eyes of a few. But it is in no way comprehensive. For this reason, a website has been created where you can share your own story of Irene, at www.vermontflood.com. At the time of this publication, many state residents were still struggling financially and emotionally due to flood losses.
