~ Notes ~ Chapter 1 1. When we tabulate statistics from the 2007 and 2008 American Community Surveys, we cite Ruggles et al. (2009) in the text because the data come from files made available by the IPUMS project, which Ruggles directs. Chapter 3 1. We distinguish the concepts of “multiraciality,” “multiracial identification,” and “multiracial reporting.” Multiraciality refers to someone whose parents (or grandparent or other ancestors) were from different racial groups (given current constructions of such groups). Multiracial identification refers to the process and result of seeing oneself as being multiracial. Multiracial reporting refers to the act of reporting oneself as having multiraciality. As we note in various parts of the book, these need not correspond. 2. When we report statistics for 2008, we mean the beginning of 2008, which we infer by combining samples from both the 2007 and the 2008 American Community Surveys (Ruggles et al. 2009). ...
