53 Morning Song As faint lavender light fills the river valley, he leans forward and fully spreads his wings. His bright red shoulders exposed with a flash, blackbird summons spring. Waŋ! De miye. Full voice at dawn trills to claim the coming day as the first rays of sun kindle his defending song. Sheltered from the wind in a thick stand of cattails, he has survived the night. Waŋ! De miye. His morning challenge echoed from among the reeds, blackbird quickly changes his pitch in response, and from upland past the edge of the marsh, she answers his song. Waŋ! De uŋkiye.
