DOCUMENT 45 Document 45 is a letter from I:Iammad b. 'Ajib to Faqih Khojali. The text has been taken by the editors from the original.1 I:Iammad, nicknamed ?ilj al- 'ijl or "Calfs Foot," was remembered in later years as a successful general in the service of his father, 'Ajib b. Mul:lammad al-'Ajayl; however, the present document provides some indication that he may also have succeeded 'Ajib as governor of the northern province, as did his brothers Badi and 'Abd Allah,2 though perhaps his tenure was brief. Document 45 was written before the death of Shaykh Khojali in 115511742-1743.3 Since 'Abd Allah, on the strength of the witness rosters of the central government, would seem to have governed throughout the period from 1733 to 1744,4 it is probable that I:Iammad held office before 1733.
