DOCUMENT 36 Document 36 purports to be a grant by a Hamaj authority to Al}.mad al-Ba~ir, the last independent Shaykh of the !:Ialawiyin, consisting of land where he lived. A very imperfect English version was recorded by G.B. Tame.1 The charter is not dated. The issuing authority was not the sultan, nor was it "Mohammed Likeilik." As Tame's informants elsewhere made clear, the Hamaj authority contemporary to Shaykh Al}.mad was Mul}.ammad b. 'Adlan b. Mul}.ammad Abu Likaylik.2 The object of the grant was apparently Shaykh Al}.mad's village, which probably lay in the !:Ialawi dar, along the Blue Nile near al-Tumayd. "This title deed from the Sultan is written in the land of the Fung, in the City of Sennar the fortified, governed by her ruler and her ruler's son the lord of far and near. The lord the Sultan ibn El Sultan Mohammed Likeilik has made over to the Sheikh Ahmed el Basir, the Halawi, the Dar of his village, be it in rainland or by the river, to the honour of God and his Prophet, as indulgence for that last day when money and sons will be of no avail except to those who have a pure heart. And this village shall have no taxes levied upon it neither Matura nor Mukhlaya nor Kersha nor any of the customary tributes.
