87 About the Author Richard Jarrette is a psychotherapist with nearly forty years experience specializing in abused, damaged, and neglected adults, teenagers, and children . He directed an alcohol and drug recovery treatment center as well as a counseling center adjacent to San Quentin State Prison for families of inmates. Jarrette attended USC–UCLA and The Fielding Institute and holds degrees in clinical psychology and English. While in college he came across the poem “Little Horse,” by W. S. Merwin, in a chapbook entitled, Animae and immediately knew that this was a kind of response to Ezra Pound’s “Personae,” and the poem’s impact on his life was incalculable . Beso the Donkey may be a response to or dialogue with this poem forty years later. Jarrette has written a screenplay , Better Stuff, and continues to write poetry. ...
