Form: nearly cylindrical, slightly recurving sides, direct rim, rounded lip, disc impressed base. Size: lip diam. 13.6 cm, max. diam. 14.2 cm, base diam. 7.4 cm, ht. 14.2 cm, wall thickness 0.3–0.5 cm. Finish, color, decoration: interior, polished light orange slip; exterior, well burnished orange slip decorated with panels of single standing figure (in profile) carrying standard done in red and black. Remarks: an unusual style of figure painting, so far not noted elsewhere. d. Red-and-black-on-orange gloss ware bowl. Form: rounded sides, direct rim, rounded lip, slightly concave base. Size: lip diam. 12.4 cm, max. diam. 14 cm, base diam. 6.2 cm, ht. 11.5 cm, wall thickness 0.3–0.4 cm. Finish, color, decoration: interior, slipped orange, lightly polished, with 2 cm, broad red rim stripe; exterior, slipped and polished orange with red and black encircling stripes framing a line of birds painted black which form a rim band resting on a line of black dots. Remarks: comparable in shape and ware to two vessels from Xacbal close to Ilón (Termer 1931, Figs. 9, 10). e. Incised black tripod bowl. Form: recurved sides, parenthesis rim, rounded lip, flat base, 3 hollow feet (all broken off). Size: lip diam. 14 cm, max. diam. 1 cm, body ht. 10.1 cm, wall thickness 0.3–0.5 cm. Finish, color, decoration: interior, weathered, may have been unslipped; exterior, slipped and polished black with central incised band consisting of crossThe thirteen specimens described here belong to the Montano collection, and all, save one (Fig. 124.1a), are in the National Museum ofArchaeology and Ethnology of Guatemala. The donor, the late Dr. Hector Montano Novela of Guatemala, was an enthusiastic amateur archaeologist and collector. The items illustrated are reported to have originated from three different parts of Guatemala: a–f, Ilón, northwestern Quiché; a-j, Panajachel, on Lake Atitlan, Solola; k–m, La Flojera, on tie Rio Salinas midway between Delicias to the north and Caribe to the south and not far from the northern border of Alta Verapaz. Fig. 124.1a–f. Vessels from Ilón, all early Late Classic (Tepeu 1) types save e, which is not familiar to me. a. Red-and-orange-on-buff deep bowl. Form: nearly cylindrical, slightly flaring sides, direct rim, rounded lip, flat base. Size: lip diam. 13.6 cm, base diam, 4.5 cm, ht. 14.2 cm, wall thickness 0.4–0.5 cm. Finish, color, decoration: interior, smoothed unslipped dark gray; exterior, slipped and polished buff with red and orange decoration consisting of central wall band of vertical stripes and lines, in alternating red and orange groups. b. Red-on-orange gloss ware deep bowl. Form: nearly cylindrical, slightly rounded sides, direct rim, rounded lip, flat base.
