Morley is usually the first and third elements of Glyph F that are retained in the combined FG forms, the second (the knotted band) element being eliminated. In 1936 Hermann Beyer (1936b) cited four cases of Glyphs G8 and F combined: two from Palenque, one from Yaxchilan, and one from Copan (Fig. 49.1d–g). It will be noted that in three examples the superfix and suffix of Glyph F have bean retained in the combined forms; the central element only having been replaced by G8. In the fourth example, from Yaxchilan, the knotted middle element replaces the usual suffix. The association of the essential elements of these two glyphs in a combined form indicates a correspondingly close relationship between them. Recently Heinrich Berlin (1943) has published a new Palenque text in stucco showing Glyph G3 combined with Glyph F (Fig. 49.1b). In spite of the fact that the F superfix is on a still missing fragment, there can be little doubt that it was originally present . Berlin calls attention to another GAF combined form at Palenque, also from the same building, the Temple of the Sun (Fig. 49.1a). There is a third example of Glyph G3 at Palenque, but not combined with Glyph F (Fig. 49.1l). A comparison of this last glyph with figures la and lb will show how, the superfix and suffix of Glyph F (Fig. 49.1m) have been retained in the combined glyph, and the knotted band central element eliminated. The above six examples are those of Glyphs G and F of the Supplementary Series combined in a single glyph in each case: two examples of Glyph G3 The two glyphs known as G and F were once believed to have formed part of the Lunar or Supplementary Series. In the past ten years Thompson (1935:84–85; 1940; 1944) and Beyer (1935a–b; 1939) have called attention to occurrences with Calendar Round dates of either Glyph G alone or, less frequently, of Glyphs G and F together. In such cases they stand between day and month signs, and are completely dissociated from any Lunar Series. The purpose of this paper is to bring together further evidence that Glyph F is not a part of the Lunar Series. In 1931 I noticed on Stela 52, Calakmul, an unusual combination of Glyphs G and F of the Supplementary Series (Fig. 49.1i), in which the essential element of Glyph G9 (Fig. 49.1n), the kin sign, appears incorporated with the affixial elements of Glyph F, specifically the latter’s diagnostic superfix and suffix (Fig. 40.1m). This intermingling of elements from the two glyphs would indicate some close relationship between them, at least that they are members of the same group. Since Glyph G has been surely shown by Thompson to belong with the Initial Series , it follows that Glyph F also probably belongs with the same count and not with the Supplementary Series, as I originally believed. The commonest form of Glyph F is composed of three elements: a highly distinctive superfix, itself divided into three parts; a central element which is clearly a knotted band; and a suffix which is as characteristic as the other two elements (Fig.49.1m).
