H. Barlow Nacional de Antropologia in 1944 (Fig. 73.1a–d) and a photograph of a vessel examined in Naranjo (Fig. 73.1e). From these pieces a typology of the style may be undertaken. Decoration consists of geometric painting on a white or cream slip, and is either chocolate or red-and-black. The major design area is exterior, but the inside rim bears a simple pattern. Two forms of tripod bowls appear: those with hollow legs resembling the end of a broom handle, and those with ringAnew type of painted pottery, corresponding closely to that from the old Tepuzteco area, was found by Mr. R. J. Weitlaner and myself in the southern drainage of the upper Balsas River (Rio de las Truchas). We published two complete pieces in Tlalocan (1944:1, Pl. 4) and Hendrichs published a third, from Ichcatepec, north of Balsas, in Tierras Ignotas (1945–1946:1, Fig. 106). To this scanty record of illustration it seems appropriate to add my drawing of four sherds which we acquired for the Instituto 73.1. Sherds and bowl in Yeztla-Naranjo style from El Naranjo, Guerrero (scale of sherds about ¾; bowl 13 cm across top). r. h. BarloW 282 shaped legs. The former are decorated with designs somewhat like exaggerated cigar-bands. In the few pieces available, certain elements are repeated: a diamond pattern (Fig. 73.1b, d), a boxlike maze (Fig. 73.1d; Hendrichs 1945–1946:1, Fig. 106; Tlalocan, Pl. 4, upper left), and a spiral (Fig. 73.1e; Tlalocan, Pl. 4, upper left). Dots are used singly or in rows (Fig. 73.1d, e; Tlalocan, Pl. 4, upper right). Ring-shaped supports or variants thereof are found in Nicoya black-line ware and in red-lip ware and Curridabat ware from Las Mercedes, Costa Rica (Lothrop 1926:1:224, 2:clxvii, clxxiii); in Estanzuelas red-on-buff in eastern Salvador (Longyear 1944, Pl. VIII, 31); and in the Soncautla complex, Tres Zapotes (Drucker 1943b, Pl. 24). Additional data on distribution would be welcome.
