SUGGESTED LISTENING This section lists recordings by people featured in this book, and other related recordings, mainly of artists discussed in the chapter introductions . African-American gospel music is not always easy to find in mainstream record stores, but many larger cities in the United States have stores which specialize in it; outside of these, a developing interest by collectors has led specialty mail order companies to stock it. Record companies such as Air, Jewel, and Malaco/Savoy also supply direct. In the United States, secondhand record stores are a valuable source of recordings. The listing is mainly of recordings which were still in print at the time of compilation, in late 1995. The change from vinyl to CD format has removed many gospel recordings from the market, and CD issues do not yet provide a comprehensive survey of all facets of the music—note the imbalance between vintage quartet recordings and those by choirs or preachers of the same era. Recordings by artists featured in the book are listed unless they have been out of print for some time and are effectively impossible to obtain. For other artists, the listing is confined to CDs—many reissuing analog recordings—with vinyl albums listed only if they contain material of particular significance not available on CD. Such albums are likely to have been deleted by their manufacturers, but may still be available through retail outlets. It is also worth noting that much gospel music, especially on cassette tape, is distributed only in limited areas and limited quantities.
