Thismultifacetedstoryismostheavilyweightedtowardtheexperiences ofAmericancombatandstaffofficersintheFEAF.Fortheexperiences ofthepilotsandenlistedmenofthe24thPursuitGroup(andthe sources 4/2/03,1:09PM 505 Sources 506 pursuitsquadronsofitspredecessor,the4thCompositeGroup),Ihave againtappedthesourcesusedinthepreparationofmybookDoomedatthe Start,includingtheinterviewsconductedin1945forWalterEdmonds’s TheyFoughtwithWhatTheyHad(attheAFHRA),in1943byWilliam Priestley(the“PhilippineCollection”inRG407,NARA),in1958by JohnToland(theTolandPapersintheManuscriptDivisionoftheLOC), andbymein1979–86,aswellasnarrativespreparedformebytheparticipants andtheircorrespondencewithmefrom1976–89.Ihaveagainused pilots’personaldiariesandtheirprewarcorrespondencetofamiliesand friends.Inexpandingthecoverageofparticipantstoincludemembersof the19thBombGroup(H),the27thBombGroup(L),theAirWarning Company,andtoalimitedextentthe200thCoastArtillery(Antiaircraft) andtheProvisionalTankGroup,Ihaveagainreferredtothe1943Priestley and1945Edmondsinterviews,andaugmentedthemwiththoseIconducted in1994–2002.Prewarcorrespondencewithfriendsandfamilyand letterstomefrom19thBombGroupandAirWarningCompanypersonnel from1981–2002havealsobeentapped. Thebook’scoverageofwhattranspiredatthestafflevelintheFEAF anditspredecessors,theUSAFFEandPDairforcesintheprewarperiod, isheavilydependentonthedetailedletterssenthomebyMaj.KirtleyJ. Greggand,toalesserextent,byMaj.WilliamH.Maverick,copiesofwhich weremadeavailabletomebytheirfamilies.AllisonInd’sBataan:TheJudgment Seat(1944)alsoprovidedinsightintotheoperationsofFEAFHQ,as, ofcourse,didLewisH.Brereton’sTheBreretonDiaries(1946),althoughthe lattercontainsslightfactualerrorsregardingtimesandplaces.Brereton’s officediary(acopyisavailableattheEisenhowerLibrary)isaninvaluable sourcefordetailsonFEAFHQoperationsonDecember8,1941. FortheplansandpreparationsofstaffofficersatAAFHQ(anditspredecessor ,theArmyAirCorps)inWashington,Ihaveexhaustivelyexplored the NationalArchives’s holdings—particularly RG 18—for the period 1939–41.ThelateBillBurt’srecollectionsofhisexperiencesintheOCAC PlansDivision,assharedincorrespondencewithmeandaspublishedin hisAdventureswithWarlords(1994),wasthestartingpointforunderstanding thesituationduringthatperiod.Particularlyusefulistheday-to-day accountingofplansandarrangementsfortheaerialreinforcementofthe Philippines in theAir Staff office diary maintained by Brig. Gen.
