There’s the “WinNguyen ”situation,the“Nguyen-ingEdge,”“Nguyen-Breaker” andthe“Who?What?Where?AndNguyen.”That’sjustmy lastname.Therehavebeenplentyofcreativecatch-phraseswith myfi rstname,aswell.Suchas:“Dat-A-Way,”“Dat’sMoreLike It,”and“ThisandDat.”Ievensometimesrefertomyselfas Aubrey’s“Datty.”Butthemosteffectiveuseofmynamewas, fi ttingly,createdbythepeoplewhonamedmeinthefi rstplace: my parents. Butmyfatheralwaysbelievedhecouldmakealivinginthe restaurantbusiness,andwhenIstartedmakinganameformyself onthefootballfieldinhighschoolandcollege,heandmy mothermadeanotherrunatthefoodindustrywithHu-DatRestaurant .Thenameisactuallyacombinationofmynameand mybrotherHung’sname.I’mbiasedinmycritique,ofcourse, butitisanoutstandingrestaurantthathasbecomealandmark ofsortsandatourist’sdestinationinRockport-Fulton.Itwasa successrightfromthestartbecausethefoodwasgoodandthe location—nearthewaterfrontinFulton—wasmuchbetterthan thefirstattempt.Witheachstorythatcameoutaboutme,the restaurantalsoreceivedfreepublicity. Reportersarealwayslookingforinterestinganglesfortheir stories,andmyroutetoTexasA&Mfeaturedmoreanglesthan some geometry textbooks.
