C H P T E R 6 Texas &M’s Big, Fat Failure ONE OF THE MORE MENINGFUL compliments I’ve everreceivedcamefromamanIbarelyevenknew.RetiredMaj. Gen.TedHopgood,atwo-stargeneralintheMarineCorps,was thecommandantoftheCorpsofCadetsatTexasA&MwhenI wasincollege.OurpathsrarelycrossedonthesprawlingCollege Stationcampus,butwedidsharesomethingofabondinterms ofourunderstandingoftheVietnameseculture.A1965graduate ofTexasA&M,Hopgoodservedthreetoursasaninfantry offi cerinVietnamfrom1965to1971.HistimeinVietnam broughthimface-to-facewiththeVietcong,theNorthVietnamese Army,theSouthVietnamesewarpersonnel,andthepeople ofSouthVietnam.Hopgoodisarealheroandahighlyrespected leaderofmenineverysense,soIwasblownawaywhenIfi rst readsomeoftheglowingthingshehadtosayaboutmeinan interviewwith12thManMagazine. “IfIhadbeenabletoplaycollegefootball,IliketobelieveI wouldhaveattemptedtoplaylikeDat,”saidHopgood,alsoa Texas &M’s Big, Fat Failure ✮ 81 hugefanofA&MfootballandallAggiesports.“Iadmiredhis heartanddetermination.HepersonifiedwhattheAggiespirit andAggiefootballisallabout.ThefactheisVietnamesealsois ofsignificancetomebecausethedeterminationandthefighting spiritIsawDatdisplayineverygameiswhatIrememberabout theverystrongfeelingsIhadabouttheVietnamesepeople.The NorthVietnameseandtheVietcongsoldiersmytroopswentup againstwerefantasticallydedicatedandskilledsoldiers.Ican saythesamethingaboutmanyoftheSouthVietnamesesoldiers andMarinesIservedwith.Datepitomizesthedetermination andnever-give-upspiritIencounteredinfightingwithand againsttheVietnamesepeople.” Pretty impressive, huh? But now that I have patted myself ontheback,Ifeelcompelledtoletyouinonthetruth:It’sa good thing General Hopgood never saw me practicing during myearlydaysatA&M.It’sanevenbetterthingthathecouldn’t havereadmymindbackthen.Hadheknownmeorseenme then,hewouldhavelikelytakenonelookatmeanddrawnsome dramaticallydifferentconclusions—probablythesameconclusions manyoftheTexasA&Mcoacheswerereachingaboutme.
