Prologue T his humble book, which I present for the consideration of the public who loves to read, has been composed with the sole idea of serving as a means of entertainment. There is no doubt that these readings, if read with patience, will be of great help to the young. They will find in Mis Memorias beautiful examples of filial obedience, which, if imitated, would make parents striving to attain their children’s good fortune very happy. I have divided this work into two parts because of unavoidable circumstances. The first part of my book includes the most notable incidents of the first years of my youth, which were printed in my soul with indelible characters and which will, in my humble opinion, not lack in interest and entertainment. In the pages of this first volume, the reader will find real-life experiences that may appear to be tall tales. However, as a faithful , sincere man, I assure you that all of the incidents portrayed were actual happenings. For the second volume I have reserved some other celebrated , entertaining incidents in which real-life experiences of my humble story will be woven with those of many other people of Rio Grande City and surrounding towns. These individuals have honored me with their sincere friendship to this day. I am certain that my amiable readers who reside in this region know many if not all of these people, a reason they should be on the lookout for the second volume coming out soon and should acquire it to complete the entire work.1 The style that I have used to write this book is simple and comprehensible in the hope of avoiding tiresome reading. I know my writing has many defects and errors, but I am count- ing on the amiable public who do me the honor of reading it to excuse me, given the enormous sacrifices incurred in its publication.
