# C H A P T E R 21 Tubular-Neck Bottles Berta Lledó This group of 37 bottles from the ship’s cargo of cullet is distinguished by tall and narrow tubular necks, sometimes wheel-cut with different designs (Fig. 21-1). There is no intact piece or complete profile among them; generally the necks are completely preserved, but with almost no attached body fragments . A few rounded bottoms with wheel-cut decoration are parts of these bottles. Because of their colors and glass quality, these bottoms are cataloged together with some of the necks, although there is no certainty that they were parts of the same pieces. A relationship between neck and bottom decoration was not a criterion in associating a neck with a bottom since tubular-neck bottles from other places can exhibit different designs on their bodies and necks. Cataloged bottles are represented only by necks, with the single exception of TN 28, a globular, very thick, faceted bottle without associated neck that is unique to the Serçe Limanı collection because of its decoration and glass composition, both of which point to Persia. According to Robert Brill, the chemical composition of the piece (which differs from the other glass) is very high in magnesium (MgO), which is characteristic of Sasanian glass. An approximately contemporary blue vessel of similar shape and decoration was found at Beirut. It is noteworthy that the necks have only two kinds of decoration. For example, TN 17 and TN 18 have the same decoration, and TN 20 is the same as three pieces that are not illustrated. Amber is the predominant color (14 of 36 pieces, or 39), followed by green (ten pieces, 28), yellow (seven pieces, 19), clear (two pieces, 5), and then blue, blue-green, and purple (one each, 2). Only two pieces (5) have purple swirls. As is usual in the cullet, most of the glass is of fair quality (21 pieces, 58), an attribute not repeated in the catalog. Of the group, 39 is of poor quality and just one piece (TN 28) is of good quality. Thirteen pieces (36) have developed light iridescence, six (17) moderate iridescence, and four (11) heavy iridescence. These vessels were perhaps toiletry bottles, as it is believed they were containers for rose water, whose contemporary use is well described by S. D. Goitein: Fumigating the dining room after an elaborate meal was one of the amenities of life which anyone who could afford it would not forgo. In addition to purifying the air and making one feel comfortable, it was customary to sprinkle those present, and, in particular, the guests, with rose water. We can hardly imagine today how widespread the use was of water distilled from rose petals in those times. One enjoyed their fragrance and believed in their comprehensive faculties of enhancing or restoring health.
