# C H A P T E R 17 Bubble-Rim Bottles Catalina Puche Acién and George F. Bass There does not seem to be a specific name in the glass literature for a bottle with a neck that bulges at the top beneath an incurving rim (Fig. 17-1 and Pl. 19). Such bottles are here called bubble-rim bottles (BR). The Serçe Limanı bottles are further characterized by tapering or cylindrical necks, nearly globular bodies with rounded or sloping shoulders, and mostly concave bottoms, the exceptions being BR 2, with flat bottom, and BR 16 and 25, with rounded bottoms. The relative height and slope of the shoulder may vary. There are both decorated and plain bottles. Forty-two examples of bubble-rim bottles have been identified . The extreme thinness of parts of the body walls has led to the disappearance of some body parts, making joins between surviving fragments exceedingly difficult to identify. Nevertheless, in ten examples sufficient fragments were preserved to establish complete profiles (BR 1, 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, and 22). The majority, however, are represented only by rim and neck fragments, although 20 do have portions of their shoulders preserved (BR 3–12, 17, 19, 22–28, 30, and 36). Two pieces (BR 24 and 25) have only their bodies preserved but almost certainly do not belong to any of the cataloged rims and necks, and thus they are listed individually. In the bottles cataloged below, the quality of glass is generally poor, usually with striations and numerous tiny, medium, or large bubbles. Most of the bottles are purple (14 bottles, 33) or yellow-green (13 bottles, 31). There are seven amber bottles (17), six green bottles (14), and one blue-green bottle (2). Bottles with complete profiles range in height from 8.1 to 15.8 cm and in shoulder diameter from 8.8 to 12.4 cm. Three examples (BR 1, 15, 22) are almost the same height (15 and 15.2 cm), and BR 2, 14, and 18 exhibit similar heights (14.3, 14.4, and 14.5 cm). Rims range in diameter from 2.1 to 5.7 cm, with neck diameters ranging from 1.1 to 4.7 cm and wall thickness from 0.5 mm to 1.1 cm. A third of the bottles exhibit some form of decoration. There are several types of mold-blown decoration: fluted (BR 13) and honeycomb with rhomboid dimples (BR 14–22, 24– 25) and/or round dimples (BR 16, 17, 19, 21, 23–25). BR 26 has a green thread attached to the outer surface of its rim. The bottles are of three types: I, without decoration; II with molded decoration; and III, with trailing. Because the majority of pieces consist of rim and neck fragments, they are divided further in the catalog by neck type: subtype A necks taper upward to form truncated cones, and subtype B necks are cylindrical with straight or almost straight sides. Rims exhibit a variety of forms, illustrated in Figs. 17-2 through 17-4. Slight differences are probably the result of individual manufacture and not of intentional design on the part of the glassmaker.
