that a plate’s primary color is yellow-green. Elongated bubbles and spiral stretching of the glass from the centrifugal force exerted when the blowpipe or pontil was twirled are visible. During a decade of restoration in the Bodrum Museum, only two basic shapes were noted, deep and shallow, but only one example of the former was found (PL 1). The manufacture of both shallow and deep plates was probably similar, the depth conforming to the plate’s intended function. The shallow plates are categorized in the catalog by rim type (Type A, flat; Type B, scooped) and then by body profile (Type 1, sides flaring at approximately 45o ; Type 2, sides rising vertically). Figure 6-2 shows the variety of lip profiles found among both the fragments and the more completely reconstructed plates. Since each vessel was handcrafted, the lip can change subtly in profile on any one plate. Determination of a lip profile was based on the profile most prevalent over a rim’s preserved circumference. Lip profiles are as follows: Lip Profile A: Ridge on the rim exterior a short distance from the lip; interior either smooth or slightly wavy. Lip Profile B: Thickened upturned lip produces wedge shape below. Lip Profile C: Thickened, beveled lip. Lip Profile D: Lip uniform in thickness, straight or wavy. Lip Profile E: Lip thickened, sometimes bulging below. Lip Profile F: Flat lip with exterior wedge. From the many thousands of glass fragments recovered from the wreck, it was possible to reconstruct hundreds of dishes. None appear to have been intact at the time of sinking, nor were substantial fragments found in the areas believed to have been the living quarters of the ship. Shards labeled as being from clearly anomalous quadrants, as in PL 1, 30, and 59, can almost certainly be dismissed as the result of a misread or miscopied digit out of millions of digits copied onto the shards as parts of lot numbers. For example, among over 225 body fragments, only one, said to be from grid square I4, is labeled as coming from outside the area of the cargo hold. All, therefore, should be considered part of the cargo of cullet. Although many different types of dishes were pieced together from the broken glass, in this chapter I deal exclusively with plates, mostly of large size (Fig. 6-1). The plates have broad rims, with one exception greater than 1 cm, and plain bottoms with thick bosses. Sixty-two examples meeting those criteria were identified. Wall thickness is generally between 2 and 3 mm and boss thickness between 9 and 12 mm. Deviating measurements are given in the catalog. In no case was any decoration noted on a plate or plate fragment. Four colors were employed in their manufacture: amber, green, yellow-green, and purple, with light and dark gradations of each.
