ix acKnowledgmenTS It almost goes without saying that books are never written in isolation. This particular book is no different. It simply would not exist without the insights and contributions of numerous individuals , some of whom I would like to thank here. While many have contributed something significant to this project, any and all of its faults are wholly of my own making. I would first like to thank Robert Johnston. His constant support for both this project in particular and my work in general has allowed me the freedom to engage in a manner of theological reflection that is both timely and firmly rooted in the rich history of the Christian tradition. It would be difficult to overstate his contributions to either this book or my burgeoning understanding of what it means to do theology in the contemporary world and, perhaps more importantly, what it means to be a theologian. I also owe a debt of gratitude to Jim Buhler from the University of Texas for introducing me to an entire world of film music scholarship of which I had previously been unaware. Dr. Buhler’s insights and guidance undoubtedly strengthened the many film music analyses that are contained in the following pages. His constant willingness to partake in a thoroughly interdisciplinary endeavor not only provided me with a model for how to engage in a fruitful dialogue across disciplines, but it also afforded me the means for producing a much stronger work of theology. x acKnowledgmenTS With a great deal of patience, my editor, Carey Newman, helped not only to shape this into a much more readable book but also to shape me into a much better writer.
