She thought he probably wanted to have sex with her, and that she could simply flirt and refuse. The man didn’t mention about the money— that he wanted it back. She supposes if she had put it to bed in the bank it would have multiplied, like grasshoppers, but she made a house of her money and now she can’t rub the bills against each other to see if they’ll breed. There is a big fire in the belly of the house. It gestured to her with its fiery hair, did its dance, mocking her. She knows it wants out of that big unbreakable jelly jar. She knows those flames are in there licking and fucking. She would like to toss some dollars in to appease the fire mouth. She doesn’t have any bills left. When she was a child, the only money she saw was coins. She knew what they meant. If she still had her money, she would stitch her bills into a skirt to wear to the town dance. ...
