Biographical Notes Paul F. Cummins, Ph.D. Paul Cummins was born in Chicago, Illinois, moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and then to Los Angeles, California. He attended Stanford University (B.A., 1959), Harvard University (M.A.T., 1960), and the University of Southern California (Ph.D., 1967). He has taught English at Harvard School and the Oakwood School in California as well as at U.C.L.A. In 1970, he became the Headmaster of St. Augustine’s Elementary School in Santa Monica and a Founder and Headmaster of the Crossroads School. In 1995, he was the lead founder of New Roads School and is currently the Executive Director of the New Visions Foundation. His publications include a booklet on Richard Wilbur, several articles on education, and numerous poems which have appeared in journals including The New Republic, Poetry LA,Whole Notes,Wild Bamboo Press, Bad Haircut Quarterly, Wordwrights, Slant, and others. His biography on Herbert Zipper, Dachau Song: The Twentieth-Century Odyssey of Herbert Zipper (Peter Lang, 1992), has been translated into Chinese and German. For Mortal Stakes: Solutions for Schools and Society, was published in 1998 by Peter Lang Publishing and Bramble Books and was also published in Japan. Keeping Watch: Reflections On American Culture, Education and Politics was published by Firstbooks Library in 2002. Argonne Press issued a collection of poetry, A Postcard from Bali, also in 2002. An essay, “The Vital Left,” appeared in Fake City Syndrome, published by Red Hen Press in 2002. Cummins serves on the board of trustees of the American Poetry Review, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, ExEd, the Sam Francis Foundation, the Gabriella Axelrad Foundation, New Roads School, and the New Visions Foundation. He and his wife, Mary Ann, live in Santa Monica, California. They have four daughters. Anna K. Cummins Anna K. Cummins graduated from Crossroads School in Santa Monica in 1991, and Stanford University in 1996 with a B.A. in History. At Stanford, she studied with Dr. Estelle Friedman (Women’s Studies), Dr. Jody Maxmin (Art History) and Dr. Jack Rakove (American History ). Also at Stanford, she was captain of the fencing team in 1994 and performed in chamber music concerts on the violin. She taught at New Roads School in Santa Monica in 1996 and received her M.A. in International Environmental Policy at the Monterey Institute for International Studies in California in 2002. She co-authored For Mortal Stakes: Solutions For Schools and Society, co-published in 1998 by Peter Lang and Bramble Books. Anna is currently working for Save Our Shores in Santa Cruz, California. Emily Cummins Emily Cummins graduated from Northwestern University in 1998 with a B.A. in History. At Northwestern she played varsity softball, played cello in a university orchestra, and made Dean’s List majoring in History. She worked at New Roads School from 1998-1999 and then traveled throughout South America with her sister, Anna. She received her M.S.W. from UCLA in June of 2002, and is currently a social worker in the Lennox School District in Los Angeles.
