111 Biographical Note Joël BarraquielTan was born in Manila in 1968. He received an M.F.A. in creative writing from Antioch University, and a B.A. in ethnic studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Joël is the author of two collections of poetry, Monster and el canto de animal. Joël is also the editor of three highly-praised collections of sexual storytelling, Best Gay Asian EroticaVol.I,& Best Gay Asian EroticaVol. II, and Inside Him: New Gay Erotica. His award-winning essays, short fiction, and verse have appeared in various international academic and commercial venues, including translations in Italian andTagalog. Joël, along with Ric Parish and Dean Goishi, is co-founder of LosAngeles’Asian PacificAIDS InterventionTeam. Joël’sAIDS activism began in 1988.
