22 Prologue Kouretes at stage front. Seven goddesses (Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Inanna) placed around the stage. Lily in the center of the stage starts a chant and weaves in and out of Kouretes and goddesses as Kouretes pick up her words. Lily: One pebble left on the shore where it lands, one plume of salt-spray thrown up by a rock-face, Kouretes: one plume of salt-spray thrown up by a rock-face, there is no end if there was no beginning. Lily: There is no end if there was no beginning. One plume of salt-spray thrown up by a rock-face, Kouretes: One plume of salt-spray thrown up by a rock-face, one pebble left on the shore where it lands . . . A winding road of light appears, leading towards a small house in the distance. Lily begins to walk on it. Lily: Gathering women who touch, who honor, who loom traditions through the body of earth, there is no end if there was no beginning, so help me to tell where this ending began, gathering women who touch, who honor, who loom traditions through the body of earth. Kouretes: Please lend me your voices, and some of your stories, to spiral this shell through the layers of sand. 23 Lily: to spiral this shell through the layers of sand.
