135 The Refuseniks October 3, 2003 An international movement for justice and peace made its voice clear this week in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Seoul, Cairo, Warsaw, Brussels, Stockholm, Ankara, Beirut, The Island of Crete, and in Spain in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Malaga. Just a few months ago, our government was calling the United Nations irrelevant; and now we are on our knees asking for help. Irrelevant indeed. Our occupations have led to ongoing guerrilla warfare in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. The occupations have been a failure. The imposters in our government who have designed this terror must be held responsible. George Bush has earned the name of his predecessor, Rutherford Hayes, who was also a selected President and through the four years of his miserable presidency was known as “Your Fraudulency.” Can you smell a slight shift in the commercial media? They are starting to follow the lead of those of us in the streets. Perhaps they can see the dramatic increase in poverty and unemployment. Perhaps they can see that every day fewer people have any claim on the current shoddy health care programs designed solely for windfall profits. And such bankruptcy is the legacy of militarism. Not only are shifts obvious in the commercial media, we continue to see dramatic shifts among the people of Israel. The speaker of the Israeli Knesset from 1999 to 2003, Avraham Burg, has published a major article called “The End of Zionism.” He states that the Zionist revolution has always rested on two pillars: a just path and ethical leadership. He insists that neither of these pillars are operative any longer. The refuseniks within the Israeli military are growing every day. Courage to Refuse is a group of officers and soldiers who refuse to serve in occupied Palestine. And now the Israeli Air Force is in a posture of refusal as well. They have described the aerial activities in the territories 136 as illegal and immoral. Here is their statement: “We have decided to obey the order that obliges us not to carry out an order that is blatantly illegal.” Friends, we are winning in the war against war. Our own disillusioned, depressed and despondent troops occupying Iraq and Afghanistan are now making similar statements. Regime change begins at home. This regime has betrayed the people of the United States and has become a threat to our survival. We must recall the President. Recall the misleader. Get used to victory friends. We are winning. ...
