Acknowledgments Over the years I have worked side by side with many good people who were poorly paid for delivering newspapers, stocking warehouse shelves, painting signs, repairing highways, building mobile homes, being aides in nursing homes, doing community social services work, and surveying for the census. In my work as a lawyer I have also worked alongside many, many people who were paid quite a bit less than their work was worth. These folks showed me the true value of work and human dignity and the need to make good work pay. They inspired this book.
