a c k n o w l e d g m e n t s When i retired as president of Temple University in 1982, I had no intention of writing the story of my life. I was still too busy even to think about such an effort. However, some years later I was asked to write an article about my experiences in the 1960s as the white, Jewish president of the oldest black college in the United States, Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Colleagues suggested that I had been at Temple University as vice president, president, and chancellor for a longer time and should include my life and work at Temple. Others suggested that I should at least summarize my early life and education and my World War II military service. Still others felt that I should include highlights of my retirement years. The result is this book. I’m grateful to a number of people who assisted me with suggestions and comments. Richard Severo read the entire manuscript and made helpful suggestions, as did Marshall Fishwick. The Lincoln University chapter was strengthened by Richard Winchester and by helpful comments from Emery Wimbish and Grace Frankowsky. I’m indebted to George Ingram for his gracious permission to make use of his unpublished piece about my presidency of Temple. He had consulted with me on that article and then made some excellent suggestions on an early version of my own chapter.
