chaptersix RedefiningProbabilism TheDialexisdeNon-Certitudine LogicsuggeststhattheApologemashouldhavebeenBishop Caramuel’slastmajoranalysisofprobableopinion.Hehadexplained probabilismtotheauthoritiesofhisChurchwithpassionandanenormous senseofurgency.YettherebufffromthoseChurchleaders,especially thepopewhohadoncebeenhispatron,couldnothavebeenmore evident.ForCaramuel,whotookecclesiasticalcensuresseriously,theconsignment oftheApologematotheIndexofForbiddenBooksmusthave beenincrediblydistressing.Givenhisbroadrangeofinterests,itwould nothavebeensurprisingifthebishophadabandonedtheologicalprobability anddevotedhimselftoscience,linguistics,andtheothersubjects thatcapturedhisimagination.Yetlessthanadecadeafterthecondemnation ofhisApology,Caramuelessentiallyredefinedhistreatmentofprobable opinioninaworkentitledtheDialexisdeNon-Certitudine.1 TheApologemaandtheDialexisillustrateCaramuel’smaturethought concerningprobableopinion.IftheApologemaispastoralandpolemical initsapproach,theDialexisisphilosophicalandacademic,withadisplay oferuditionthatincludesHebrewandGreekquotationsaswellasCaramuel ’susualminingoftheLatinsources.Itisdefinitelyaworkdirected tohiscolleagues,ratherthanonecomposedfortheedificationofordinary Christians.TheDialexis’stheoreticalsophisticationrendersitanappropriate additiontotheTheologiaMoralisFundamentalis(1675–76),forwhich itservesasthefourthvolume.Asweshallsee,Caramuelregardedhisapproaches toprobabilityinFundamentum11andtheDialexisasdistinct butcomplementary.Together,theyrepresentaremarkableexplanationof 118 probableopinionfromanauthorwhohaddevotedmuchofhiscareerto itsanalysis. ToevaluatethesignificanceoftheDialexis,itishelpfultonotecertain circumstancessurroundingitspublication.Thediscussionwillthenconsider thenoveltyofitscentralthesisandthesignificanceofitsemphasis uponcertitudeand“noncertitude.”Tounderstandthelatter,itishelpful toexaminetheDialexis’spresuppositionsregardinglaw,humanfreedom, andthemediatingroleexercisedbetweenthetwobytheso-calledprinciple ofpossession.Allofthesedevelopments,ofcourse,haveimportant implicationsforCaramuel’sunderstandingofprobableopinion,asthe discussionshallmakeclear.Afteraddressingthesefoundationalissues,I willconsiderCaramuel’sresponsetotwopossibleobjectionstohistheory. Fromthere,discussionmovestothetheologyoftheDialexisandtothe DialexisastheculminationofCaramuel’sapproachtoprobableopinion. ThePublicationoftheDialexis ThetitlepageoftheDialexisdeNon-Certitudinegivesitspublicationdate as1675.Thetextitself,however,revealsthatitmusthavehad,incomparison toCaramuel’sotherworks,anunusuallylonghiatusbetweencomposition andactualcirculation.ThefirsteditionoftheTheologiaMoralis Fundamentalis,forexample,receivedthecensura(i.e.,therequiredexamination and permission for publication) in 1651 and was published duringthefollowingyear.AlloftheApologema’spermissionswereissued in1663—thesameyearasitspublication.ButtheDialexis’scensuresare dated1671and1672—threeandfouryears,respectively,beforethedateon thetitlepage.ThusthebookthatCaramuelwroteasbishopofSatriano/ CampagnawaspublishedonlyafterhistransfertoVigevano. Manypracticalfactors—notleastofwhichwasthebishop’smovetoa newassignment—mayexplainthedelay.YetitisalsoclearthatCaramuel demonstrateduncharacteristiccautioninbringingthistexttothepublic view.TheDialexisendswithalongsectionoflettersregardingboththe matterstreatedinthevolumeandthehistoryofitsproduction.Tohis correspondentMarcusBravo,aconsultertotheCongregationoftheIndex ,Caramuelexplainsthestepsthathetooktoprotecthisvolumefrom “thosewhotriedtosuffocateitbeforeitwassentintothelight.”2 Asa ThePublicationoftheDialexis 119 [18.227.161.132] Project MUSE (2024-04-18 21:41 GMT) precautionarymeasure,thebishopsenthistreatisetotwoprofessorsatthe UniversityofSalamanca,MichaeldeFuentesandAntoniodeSanPedro, fortheirevaluation.ThedateoftheirrepliesindicatesthatCaramuelmust havedevelopedaroughdraftoftheDialexisbeforetheendof1670.
