we could not have hoped to begin, much less complete, a project of this scope without the assistance and support of many others. First and foremost, we wish to thank the State Historical Society of Iowa for its support, both moral and material, of our work. We are truly grateful for all that the Society has done to make our work possible. We also wish to thank a group of historians who reviewed our selections for inclusion and made numerous suggestions for our further consideration.
