ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The 1961 edition was published while I was an Assistant Lecturer at Reading University. I was grateful to the Research Board for a grant towards publication costs; still more for their generosity in electing me to their Research Fellowship to enable me to continue in academic life. Professor E. F. Jacob gave me advice; Mr. W. A. Pantin and Rev. Dr. D. Callus O.P., references; Dr. D. Douie and Dr. M. Reeves advice and a generous loan of books. The President and Fellows of Trinity College, Oxford, by a scholarship subsidized my work as a research student, and my tutors, Mr. M. Maclagen and Mr. J. P.
