WhenCrook’sstarvingsoldiersarrivednearBearButte,theyweremetbya columnofwagonsbringingmuchneededprovisionsforthehungrytroops. AgroupofprisonerscapturedatSlimButtesincludesChargingBear(standing left),wholaterbecameanarmyscoutandwasmentionedfrequently byBourke.AlthoughmostIndianscapturedintheSlimButtesfightwere releasedafterinterrogation,thisgroupoptedtoremainandaccompany thetroopstooneoftheIndianagencies.(PhotoByStanleyJ.Morrow,U.S. MilitaryAcademyLibrary) Membersofthe3rdCavalrysitonfrontofatepithatwasusedasashelter forthewoundedatSlimButtes.Itisdecoratedwitha7thCavalryguidon capturedbytheIndiansattheLittleBighorn,andrecapturedatSlimButtes. CharlesKing,aprolificauthorandcareersoldier,whosemilitarycareer spannedsixdecadesbeginningwiththeCivilWar,andendingfollowingthe FirstWorldWar.Threeofficersaremissing,includingLt.Col.EugeneA.
