ThetelegraphlinebroughtnewsoftheclosenessofthePresidential electionandthefierceexcitementgeneratedbythecontest,which hadbecomenarroweddowntothedecisiontobegivenbyLouisiana ,NorthandSouthCarolina,andFlorida.ThefriendsofHayes andWheelerclaimedallthosestates,theadherentsofTildenand Hendricksstoutlyopposedthisassertionsothatnothingexactand definitecouldbeobtaineduntiltheofficialcountshouldberendered .InFloridatherivalpoliticalfactionsthreatenedbloodshed: torepressdisturbanceslikelytoarise,GeneralAugurhadbeensent therewithtencompaniesofInfantryandaBatteryofartillery.Such newsismoregravethanwouldbeanintimationofhostilitieswith foreignnations;internecinewarsarealwaysthemostfrightfuland mostcostly,exceptingalwaysthosehavinganimpassionofreligious fanaticism.Severeasourcomingexperiencesmaybe,theywillbe morewelcomethanacampaigninthesunnylandsoftheSouth FORGINGINDIANALLIANCES 165 againstourownmisguidedpeople.1 Thefirstsnowoftheseasonfell,November11th ,aftersun-down.
