121 Chapter6 ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ TheCampaignEnds Sept.14th .Thebusyhumoflivelyconversationcouldnowbeheard aroundeverycamp-fireandfromeveryknotofsoldiers:thechange wasmostagreeablefromtheglumandearlymorosenessofafew daysprevious.Theinspirating[sic]influencesofabundantfoodand bright,cleanskies,werenevermorepatentthannow;thegreatest enjoymentafterourrecentapproximationtostarvationwastosit aboutthefireandeatandchat:wehadmorethanenoughofall thecomponentsofrationtolasttheCommandforfourorfivedays andunlimitedsupplieswereavailableinDeadwood.Awagonloaded withbread,beans,coffeeandsugarwassentouttomeetMajor Upham’scommandwhichleftusyesterdayverypoorlyprovided. MajorUpham’sdetachmenthoweverreturnedtocampbeforethe supplieswerebroughtthem.TheysawnoIndians,thetrailtheytook up,provingtobeaveryoldone.Oneofthemenofthe5th Cavalry, stragglingfromthis(Upham’s)commandearlythismorningwas shotandkilledbyasmallpartyofSiouxlurkinginadvance. Severalbuggies,thefirstwehadseenformonths,droveintocamp thisevening.Amongthegentlemen,wasouroldfriendWilburHughs. Wegavethevisitorsacordialgreetingandasmuchshelterforthe nightaswaspossible.Theysuppedwithusonwhatfarewehad, 122 THEGREATSIOUXWAR supplementedbyanadditionoffreshbread,butter,sandwichesand hard-boiledeggsbroughtdownfromDeadwoodCity. Aftersundown,acourierfromGeneralSheridanbroughtGeneral Crookaletterdatedasfollows, Chicago,August1st 1876 AfewoftheIndianswhowereoutwiththehostilesinthebattles ofthe17th and25th ultimo,(June?),havearrivedattheagencies ontheMissouriRiverandatRedCloud.Theyreportmanyofthe IndiansontheirwaybacktotheAgencies.CaptainMix,Comdg.at CampBrown,sendsmethefollowingthismorning:“Indianscouts sentoutfromherereporthostileIndiansmovingSouthEast,trailed themfromaboutheadofCrazyWoman’stotheheadofLittlePowder river;numbersunknownbutbelievedtobelarge.Ithinktheyare makingfortheAgencies. “JMix Captain.” ThelastofthesixcompaniesoftheFourthCavalrywillnotarrive at[Fort]Laramieundertendays.BillhaspassedSenate,increasing companiesofSecond,Third,Fourth,FifthandSeventhCavalryto onehundredmeneach. (Signed.)P.H.Sheridan, Lt.General Chicago,Ills.,August17th ,1876 TheBillforincreasingtheRegimentsofCavalryinthefieldpassed CongressandIhavedesignatedFortD.A.Russel1 [sic]astherendezvous forequippingandmountingtherecruitsforthe2d,3d, and5th RegimentsofCavalry.Colonel[RanaldS.]Mackenzieis nowatRedCloudandinafewdayswillhavesixcompaniesofthe 4th Cavalry,twocompaniesofthe5th andoneofthe3d,fourcompanies ofartilleryandfivecompaniesofInfantrythereunderhis command.IhaveorderedthewholeoftheEleventhInfantryfrom TexastoCheyenne2 andStandingRockAgencies.Iwillgiveorders toGeneralTerryto-daytoestablishacantonmentforthewinterat 1.FortD.A.Russellwasestablishedin1867toprotectworkersconstructingtheUnion Pacific.Becausethefortbecameanimportantsupplybase,anadjacentsubpostwasestablished ,officiallydesignatedCheyenneDepot,butoftenreferredtoasCampCarlinorRussell Depot.CheyenneDepotwasdiscontinuedin1890.In1930,FortD.A.Russellwasrenamed FortFrancisE.Warren.ItlaterwastransferredtotheDepartmentoftheAirForce,andis nowWarrenAirForceBase.Frazer,FortsoftheWest,184–85. 2.CheyenneRiverAgencyinwhatisnowSouthDakota.
