Afterreceivinghisbachelor’sdegreefromHofstraUniversity in1957,heservedathree-yearstintasahighschool historyteacherandcoach.Inthemeantime,hefoundtimeto earnamaster’sdegreefromtheFletcherSchoolofLawand Diplomacyin1958andamaster’sdegreeineducationfrom Hofstrain1960. GolereenteredtheArmyinMay1961andremaineduntil 1988.HecontinuedhisformaleducationwhileintheArmy, earningamaster’sdegreeinhistoryfromStanfordUniversity in1969.Aftercompletinginfantry,airborne,andrangertraining atFortBenningin1961,GoleservedtwoSpecialForces tours in Vietnam (1966–67 and 1970–71), the latter with MACV-SOG(MilitaryAssistanceCommandVietnam-Studies and Observations Group), an unconventional warfare task forceengagedinhighlysecretoperationsthroughoutSoutheast Asia.HehadearliercompletedaSpecialForcestourin COLONELHENRYG.GOLE,USA(RET.) 149 CombatinKorea:ReflectionsbyaOnce-YoungSoldier Germany(1963–65). GolewasassignedtotheSpecialAssistantfortheModernVolunteer Army,DepartmentofArmyStaff,1971–72,andplayedarole inplanningfortheall-volunteerArmyasconscriptionwasphased out.ColonelGoleisalsoascholarofnationalrepute.HetaughtEuropean historyattheU.S.MilitaryAcademy,1977–80,andservedat theU.S.ArmyWarCollege,1980–84andagainfrom1986to1988as DirectorofInternationalandWestEuropeanStudies. HeearnedhisPh.D.fromTempleUniversityin1991andis theauthorofnumerousarticlesandbookreviewsonhistory,military education,theBundeswehr,NATO,warplanning,andspecial operations.HecontinuestoteachonanadjunctbasisattheArmy WarCollege.Hisbook,TheRoadtoRainbow:ArmyPlanningfor GlobalWar,1934–1940,waspublishedin2003.HisSoldiering:Observations fromKorea,VietnamandSafePlaces(Brasseys)isdueout inearly2005.HiscurrentprojectisthebiographyofGen.William E.Depuy. Combathasbeendescribedas1percentterrorand99percent boredom,butIfoundittobelow-gradefever,fatigue,blackheads,and defecatinginthewoods,usuallyatatimeandaplacenotentirelyof one’sownchoosing.Iintendtoconveymysenseofbeingacombat soldierinKorea.Theessenceoftheexperienceisinthedetailswithin thespiritofthetime,butmostlyitisaboutthemen.1 Ileftcollegetovolunteerforthedraftin1952becauseIwanted tobetheAudieMurphyoftheKoreanWar.SinceIwasbornin1933, thewar-in-my-headwasWorldWarII.Ifollowedthatwarlikeasports fan,keepingscrapbooks,mostlyofsleekaircraftandbeautifulships.
