1 THENINETEENTHCENTURYWASatimeofreligiousfoment intheUnitedStates.Thedisestablishmentthathadaccompanied the American Revolution meant that previously unfavorablereligiousbodiessuchasBaptistsandMethodists werenowfreetocompetewithoneandallforconverts.Asaresult ofthisfreedom,Baptists,Methodists,and,later,Cumberland Presbyterians,thevariousChristianchurches,andRoman Catholicsgrewbyleapsandbounds.Onereasoninparticular forthegrowthofBaptistswastheconceptofcongregational polity.Baptistsbelievethatnoorganizationsupersedesthelocal church,andthusthemembershipofeachlocalchurchchooses itsownleadersandmakesitsowndecisions.Allaffiliationwith otherBaptistchurchesfromthenationaltothelocallevelison avoluntarybasis.TheSouthernBaptistConvention,therefore, iscomposedofBaptistchurchesthathavedecidedtofreelyassociate with one another in order to pool their resources to promote various endeavors. However, with no hierarchy in place,theBaptistdenominationhasoftenfounditdifficultto disciplinefellowchurchesthatchoosetoassociate,butarealso CHAPTER1 PROBLEMSON THEHORIZON b.text.indd1 10/4/052:13:44PM 2 Chapter1 divisiveandwhoseactionsaredetrimentaltotheentireConvention .Atthestatelevel,nowherehasthisproblembeenmoreprominent thanintheBaptistGeneralConventionofTexas,abodythat hasknownbittercontroversy. BaptistRivalries Duringtheearly1820sthefirstknownBaptistsarrivedinaregion ofnorthernMexicoknownasTexas.Duetothegreatdangerofhostile NativeAmericanattacksongroupstravelingoverland,themostpopular routetothisnewlandwasbywayoftheGulfofMexico.These earliestBaptistsfrequentlytraveledbyshipfromNewOrleanstothe deepseaportofGalveston.Forthisreason,thestrongestpresenceof BaptistsinTexaswasoriginallyinthesouth.Withinadecadeoftheir settlementintheseregions,citiessuchasIndependence,Washingtonon -the-Brazos,Houston,andGalvestonbecamehubsoftheBaptist denomination.Bythecloseofthe1830s,thousandsofBaptistshad migratedtothesecitiesandsurroundingareas. Knownforadesiretoworktogetherinmissionaryendeavorsand topromoteeducationfortheclergy,thesefirstBaptistsformedthe Union Association in 1840 and Baylor University at Independence in1845.Withtheirnumbersgrowingrapidly,Baptistsorganizedthe BaptistStateConvention(BSC)in1848.Throughthesethreeorganizations Baptistswereabletogainanearlydenominationalfootholdon thesouthernregionsofthestate.Thoughlittleattentionwaspaidto thesparselypopulatednorthernandeasternsections,thisorganization wasthefirststatewideBaptistconventioninTexas. Bythe1850sthelandroutethroughArkansasbecamesafer,and BaptistsbegantomigrateintothenortheasternregionsoftheLone StarState.BytheendofthedecadetheoldpassagefromNewOrleans toGalvestonhadgivenwaytothelessexpensivebutmoretime-consuming wagontrailsthatledfromArkansasandtheOklahomaTerritory tonortheastTexas.Thischangenotonlyincreasedtremendously theBaptistsofnorthandcentralTexas,butalsosetthestagefordenominational bickering.AlthoughmoreBaptistsnowresidedinthe northernandcentralsectionsofTexas,leadership,funds,education, andmissionaryactivityremainedcenteredinsouthTexas.Thiscaused b.text.indd2 10/4/052:13:44PM [18.219.236.62] Project MUSE (2024-04-24 17:51 GMT) ProblemsontheHorizon 3 theBaptistsofnorthandeastTexastofeelignored,thusprompting themtocreatetheirownconvention,onemoreattentivetotheirgeographical area.TheupshotwastheEastBaptistConvention,formedin 1855.ThisorganizationwasrenamedtheBaptistGeneralAssociation (BGA)in1868.ThesedisgruntledBaptistsalsocreatedWacoUniversity in1858.AndwiththesedevelopmentsanewgroupofBaptist leadersbegantomovetotheforefrontinTexas. ItwasnotlongbeforethetwoBaptistconventionsandtheirleaders ,havingnocommonfoeorthreattounitethemandholdthem together, found themselves at odds. Arguments over which group helddominionovercertainregionssoonbegantodominatethevarious Baptistnewspapers.Furthermore,astrongrivalrybetweenBaylor UniversityatIndependenceandWacoUniversitybegantodevelop.In anattempttoraisefundsfortheirrespectiveschools,supportersofthe twofledglinguniversitiespromotedthemeritoftheirowninstitution andberatedthevalue...
