74 ALTHOUGHTROUNCEDATMARSHALL,Haydenrefused togiveup.Tohiscallforreformhenowaddedsensationalcharges :J.B.Cranfillwasanembezzler,B.H.Carrollwasanautocrat, R.T.Hankswasanadulterer,andJ.M.Carrollwaspreoccupied withtheloveofmoney.1 Inaddition,PresidentBucknerwasunder theBoard’scontrol.Haydenrarelysaidanythingnegativeabout theBoardsystemitself,butrathercontinuallyquestionedthehonesty ofseveralofitsperpetualmembers.Duringthenextsixyears Hayden intensified his attack, contending that Board members ratherthanthechurchesweremakingallofthedecisionsforthe BGCT.Thisargumentnowbecameacrusadefor“Baptistpolity.” Although the Hayden Controversy was largely founded on old personalgrievances,itincreasinglyrevolvedaroundecclesiology. Haydenmadehispositionclearthroughthecolumnsofhis paper.Ontheonehand,hesuggestedthatthosewhosupported the Board party were in fact supporting an episcopal hierarchy thatcloselyresembledRomanCatholicism.Ontheotherhand,he arguedthatthosewhosupportedhisownclaimswerenotagainst theBoardsystembutratheragainstanepiscopalhierarchythat CHAPTER6 WINNER TAKESITALL b.text.indd74 10/4/052:13:58PM WinnerTakesItAll 75 controlledtheBGCT.Headvocatedagreaterunderstandingforhis readershipoftheaffairsatthestatelevelandaloudervoiceforlocal churches.Witheachsuccessiveyearfrom1895until1901,Hayden’s chargesagainsttheBoardgrewlouderandmorecaustic.TheBoard alwaysreciprocatedinlikemanner.Theresultwasabitterdenominational feudwagedinthecolumnsoftherivalnewspapersandonthe flooroftheannualConventiongathering. ForashorttimefollowinghisroutattheMarshallConvention, Haydenamelioratedsomewhathisanti-Boardrhetoric.R.C.Burleson ,however,wasscornedbythelossofhispresidency.Probablyfor thisreason,BurlesoncontinuedtoaccuseCranfillofembezzlement. These public accusations became so pronounced that Cranfill was forcedtowritealettertoBurlesonwarninghimthatifhedidnotdesist intheseunprovenaccusationshewouldsuehimforlibel.2 Hayden, however,remainedlargelysilent.SomeTexasBaptistssuggestedthat Haydenhadfinallyrealizedhisdefeat.3 Others,however,believedhe wasmerelybidinghistimeandwaitingfornewopportunitiestoattack hisenemies.4 CranfillalsolessenedhisattacksonHayden.Onereasonforthe momentarycalmmayhavebeenthemorepressingdebateoverthe problemsofMartinismandFortunism.Theseheresiesmattersgrated againsttraditionalBaptistdoctrineanddemandedimmediateattention .So,HaydenandtheBoardputtheirdifferencesasideandunited againstthisinternalthreat.In1895rarelydidanissueoftheBaptist StandardandtheTexasBaptistandHeraldreachpublicationwithout anattackonthosewhoheldthesedoctrines.Withthe1895regular sessionoftheBGCTatBeltonquicklyapproaching,bothHayden’s followersandthoseoftheBoardwantedthesedoctrinalcontroversies tocease. The1895regularsessionoftheBGCTprovedtobemonumental .Itappearedthatallofthemessengers,excepttheMartinitesand Fotunenites,wereunitedagainstthesedoctrinalissues.TheHaydenBoard squabble took second place to this danger.
