xv ThetwoyearsandeightmonthsIwasonactivedutyserving intheArmyAirForcesduringWorldWarIIwerethemostexciting timesinmylife.IalsoseeitasamiraclethatIsurvivedtheroughly thirtycombatmissionsIflewoveroccupiedEuropeandGermanyin 1944.Manyothermenjustlikemeflewmissionsduringthatperiod andultimatelymadethesupremesacrifice.IdonotknowwhyIwas sparedbutfeelblessedthatIhavebeenabletoliveafulllife.Ilook backonthewarwithfewregrets.IfIeverhadanyconcernsabout thedestructionofpropertyandlossoflifethatmighthavebeen causedbythealliedbombingcampaign,theywereeliminatedduring atripmywife,Jean,andItookin1983. WereturnedtoEnglandthatyeartoattendareunionofthe2nd AirDivisionoftheEighthAirForce.Afterawonderfultimevisiting witholdfriends,wedecidedtovisitSwitzerlandforafewdays.One morningwetookanalldaytourthatincludedastopinBern.The driverparkedthebusandtolduswewouldhaveanhourtowalk around and visit the city. Jean and I had only walked about two blockswhenagentlemanwhowasalsoonourtourapproachedus andsaid,“IbelieveyouareAmericans,”inverybrokenEnglish.He askedifwehadvisitedanyotherplacesinEurope,andItoldhim wehadjustvisitedEnglandforafewdays,whereIhadattendeda reunionofmyWorldWarIIAirForceunit.HethenaskedifIhad Introduction xvi InHostileSkies flownoverEuropeduringthewar,andItoldhimthatIhadbeena B-24pilot.Heimmediatelytookmyhand,embracedme,andtold meheowedhislifetomeandtheotherswhohadflownoverEurope onbombingmissions.HesaidIwasthefirstpilothehadmet andthathehadalwayslookedforwardtomeetingsomeonewho flewthoseplanes. HethenexplainedthathehadbeenayoungJewishboyofsixteen livinginPolandwhentheGermansinvaded.Allofhisfamily hadbeenkilledintheHolocaust,andtheonlyreasonhewasnot killedwasthathewasyoungandvaluabletotheGermansasslave labor.WithtearsinhiseyeshesaidtheonlythingthatgavetheJewish prisonersenoughcouragetosurvivethelastyearsofthewar wasthefactthateverydayoreveryfewdays,theycouldhearand sometimesseethebombersgoover.Hearingthebomberswould givethemthatlittlebitofhopethatmaybe,justmaybe,theywould somedaybefreed.Hetoldushewassoindebtedtomeandthe otherairplanecrewsthathewantedustocometoIsraeltovisithim andhisfamily. Hepulledouthisbillfoldasweweretalkingandshowedusthe picturesofhisfamily.Oneofthepictureswasofhisdaughter’swedding .Hepointedouttheguestsinthepicture,includingthehead ofthegovernment,thedefenseminister,manycabinetministers, andotherhighgovernmentofficials.Hetoldusifwewouldvisit Israel,theywouldlayouttheredcarpet,andwewouldbetreated asroyalty.Hebeggedandpleadedforustocome.Wetoldhimwe couldnotatthistimebutwouldlookforwardtovisitingsometime inthefuture.
