207 JimDavislikestoclaimheisjustanordinaryman.Hegrewup nearAbilene,Texas,onasmallranchandenduredthetryingdaysof theGreatDepression.Hehelpedhisfamilyscrapebyinthe1930sand wasabletograduatefromAbileneHighSchoolin1940.Afterthewar, theAirForcerequiredhimtostayinthereservesuntil1962becauseof hisqualificationsasaB-29commander,butbeyondhislimitedannual trainingcommitment,hewasabletoreturntocivilianlife.Hetriedhis handatfarmingandranchingforafewyearsbeforebeginningwork atCentralTexasIronWorks,asteelfabricator,inAbilenein1948.The companyproducedframeworkforbuildings,builtstreetsweepers, andconstructedathleticstadiums.In1958thecompanydecidedto buildaplantinMidland,Texas,andaskedJimifhewouldmanage it.Aftercarefulthought,JimandJeanmadethedifficultdecisionto leaveJim’shometownandaccepttheposition.Hemanagedtheplant inMidlanduntilheretiredin1984.Jeanworkedparttimeforalocal businessmanandrancheruntilsheretiredin2001. JimandJeanhavelivedaveryactivelife,firstinAbileneand theninMidland.TheyhadonedaughterwhileinAbileneandnow havetwograndchildren.JimremainsveryactiveintheSecondAir DivisionAssociationandwiththeCommemorativeAirForce.1 Jim Epilogue byDavidL.Snead 1 The Commemorative Air Force is a wonderful organization in Midland, Texas,thatexiststopreserveaircraftfromWorldWarII.Inaddition,itmaintains 208 InHostileSkies andJeanhavealsotraveledextensivelyintheirretirement.They have visited Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, all the Baltic countries, and Russia. They have also traveled to Alaska, Canada, Europe, and Mexico. However, their favorite destination remainsHawaii. AsoftenasJimlikestosayhowordinaryheis,Ireflectonhis experiencesinWorldWarIIandrealizejusttheopposite.Jim,along withallofthosemenandwomenwhoservedinthetryingtimes ofWorldWarII,representssomethingspecial.Whilehewasand remainssmallinstature,hehaslivedafulllife.Tothisday,hedoes notcompletelyunderstandwhyhesurvivedthewarandmanyothers didnot—acommonquestionformostveterans.However,itis clearthathisdetermination,skill,andbraveryhadalottodowith it.Jimperseveredthroughextensivetrainingthatforcedsomevery qualifiedmentofalltothewayside.Hewillinglyflewintocloudsof flakonnumerousoccasionstocompletehismissionsknowingthat beingshotdown,captured,injured,orkilledweredistinctpossibilities .AlthoughmaybenotuniqueamongWorldWarIIveterans,Jim stilldeserveshiscountry’sfulladmiration.2 Whiledetermination,bravery,andskillwithoutquestionhelped Jimsurvive,hewillbethefirsttotellyouthatmanygoodmensharing similartraitsdidnotsurvive.Thisisthemysteryofwar—why dosomemenliveandsomedie?Jimhastoldmefrequentlythat luckandfromhisperspective,divineintervention,mustbeconsidered .Severaltimesshrapnelcamewithininchesofkillinghim,yet hesurvivedvirtuallyunharmed.Ontheotherhand,PaulRedden, agunnerontheplaneflyingnexttoJimonhisfirstmission,died inamosthorrificfashion.Unfortunately,thisriddlehasnodefinite answer.However,Jimbelieves,atleastinhiscase,theremayhave beenareason. an excellent museum, the American Airpower Heritage Museum.
