107 ITWASABOUT4:45P.M.whenFrankandMackeyreturnedtothe hutandtoldmethatwewereonthealertlistfortomorrow’smission .Ithoughttheywerejoking,buttheywerenot.Iputonmy clothesandwentovertothebulletinboardtoseeformyself,and sureenoughmynamewasthere.Icontinuedtohavethefeeling thatwewerejustanumber. Myspiritswereaslowastheycouldget.Ithadnowbeensix weekssinceIkissedJeanandsaidgoodbye.Ihadbeenonthemove eversinceand,asaresult,hadnotreceivedanymail.Nothaving anylettersfromJeanoranyofmyfamilywasverydiscouraging. LaterthatdayIattendedmailcall,hopingthatmaybeIwouldgetat leastoneletter,butnosuchluck.Ireturnedtoourhutandmycrew gatheredandwetalkedaboutthenextday’smission.Wealltried tojokeandseethelighterside,buttherewasnotmuchtolaugh about—atleastforme.IstillhadfreshmemoriesofthemissionI flewearlierthatdayandhowluckyIwastosurvive.Icouldnotconcentrate toomuchontomorrow’smissionforthinkingoftheone Ijustfinished.Becausethemissionwouldbethefirstformycrew, theywereexcited. Iwasbusythinkingofwhathappenedthismorningandwhat mighthappentomorrow.Iwouldberesponsibleforallthedetails fromthebriefing,goingthroughpreflight,startingtheengines,taxiCHAPTER 6 OurEarlyMissions 108 InHostileSkies ingout,takingoff,andfindingourplaceintheformation.Allof thishadtobedoneinprecisesequenceandtiming.Iwasunsure whetherIcouldkeepalloftheinformationinmyhead.Iwasalso concernedthatIwouldhavetoflytheentiremission,becausewe hadnothadthetimeoropportunitytoteachEdformationflying.I hadthoughtaboutdiscussingthisproblemwithmysquadroncommander buthesitatedbecauseheprobablywouldhavetakenEd frommycrewandgivenmesomeoneelse.Edwassuchafineperson andagoodpilotthatIdidnotwanttolosehim;so,Idecidedto keepmymouthshut.Itwastoughenoughtolearninthetraining program,buttolearnitwhileflyingcombatwasevenmoredifficult. Infact,hehadnotevenhadtheopportunitytolearntotakeoffor landtheplane.Iwasawareofthat,butIalwaysfeltifsomething happenedtomehecouldgetitsafelyontheground. Not having slept last night, the events of the previous mission shouldhavebeenenoughtomakemesleep.However,afterI learnedthatwewerescheduledtoflytomorrow,Iforgotallabout beingexhaustedandhaddifficultysleeping.Abouttwoo’clockthe nextmorningIheardthesoundoftrucksbeingstarted,andIknew itwouldnotbelonguntilIwouldgetmywake-upcall.SoonIheard footstepsoutside,thedooropened,andtheprivatewithhisflashlight cametomycotandgentlytouchedmyarmandtoldmeitwas timetogetup.Igotdressed,andbeforeIleftImadesureEd,Frank, andMackeywerereadytogo.IwasafraidMackeywouldgoback to sleep because he went to bed about an hour before wake-up time.Weallwalkedoutthedoorandasusualfoundtheweather chillyandmisty.Withthehelpoftheflashlight,wefoundourwayto theroadandmadethelongwalktothemesshall.Followingbreakfast ,mostofuscaughtatrucktothebriefingroom.Afteranopening prayer,thebriefingofficerdrewthecurtainsback,andthelarge mapofEnglandandEuropeindicatedourtargetwasnearParis.
