1 Introduction ItwastheendofJanuary1896whentheGrandJuryadjourned inthetownofLincoln,TerritoryofNewMexico.ColonelAlbert Jennings Fountain had just worked to bring indictments against severalmeninordertocombatthecattlerustlingthatranrampant inNewMexico. Hisworkfinished,Fountain,withhiseight-year-oldsonHenry whowasalongforthetrip,leftLincolnonthethirtiethdayofJanuary .Thepairheadedsouthwest,towardstheirMesillahome.The journey,some150miles,wouldtakethreedays.Itwasajourney thatthefatherandsonwouldnotcomplete,foronthethirdday theydisappearedneartheWhiteSands,anareaknownformysterious disappearances.WhatbecameofthemremainsoneofNew Mexico’sgreatestmysteries. ThedisappearanceoftheprominentColonelFountainandhis young son caused outrage throughout the territory. The sheriff, whosedeputieswerequicklybecomingsuspects,didlittletosolve thismystery.Hisstandingwasshakyanyway,ashisrighttotheof- ficewasbeingcontestedinthecourtsduetochargesoffraudin thepreviouselection.Thegovernor,anxioustogetactioninthe Fountaincase,soughtoutsidehelp. FirsthecalledonPatGarrett,themanwhofifteenyearsearlier hadkilledBillytheKid.ThenhebroughtinthePinkertonNational DetectiveAgency,whosentoperativeJohnFraser.WhatGarrett andFraserfoundwasalawlesslandtornapartbyapoliticalfeud, aplacewheretheftandmurderoftenwentunpunished.Whatfollowed wasaninvestigationthatputthelivesofeveryparticipantin danger. AlongwithPatGarrett,someofNewMexico’smostfamous citizens were involved in the investigation and subsequent trial. 2—MurderontheWhiteSands ThelistincludesAlbertFall,OliverLee,ThomasBranigan,Miguel Otero,andThomasB.Catron. Albert Fountain, who was equally loved and hated wherever hewent,hadbeenareporter,IndianfighterintheUnitedStates Army,lawyer,andnewspapereditor,aswellashavingservedinthe TexasSenateandNewMexicolegislature,theformerofwhichhe wasmajorityleaderandthelatterofwhichhewasspeaker.Acivic andpoliticalleader,ColonelFountainmadeasmanyenemiesas friends.Morethanoneattemptwasmadeonhislife.
