371 Selected Bibliography A Note on Sources There have been five essential archives that have held the greatest amount of material for this biography. The Texas State Library and Archives holds the Adjutant General files among which are the records of the Texas Rangers. The muster rolls and monthly returns and scouting reports cited in this work are from those files. The West Texas Collection at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, is also a gold mine of material; its collections focus on West Texas.The photographic collection alone is worth a few days in the library. The Special Collections in the C. L. Sonnichsen Room at the University of Texas at El Paso is also a necessary archive, as it contains what is termed the John R. Hughes Scrap Book, but in reality is a collection of photographs, a diary and newspaper clippings. The items from his diary and scrapbook cited here are from that collection. The Austin History Center, adjacent to the Austin Public Library, also holds a wonderful amount of material dealing with John R. Hughes. This material originated with brother Emery S. Hughes who married Selma Bastian. Their daughter Valentine, called “Vallie,” married Raymond H. Flachmeier, son of William and Amelia Flachmeier. A collection of clippings from various newspapers, photographs , pamphlets, letters, and other memorabilia gathered by Emery S. Hughes constitutes the Flachmeier Collection. Finally, the Linn County Museum and Genealogical Library in Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas, holds a wonderful collection of materials. Of great help was the Wickham newspaper clippings pertaining to people and events of Mound City and Linn County.
