47 Chapter Seven Procedures for Riding Sessions INITIATING A RIDING PROGRAM ThebestapproachtoinitiatingaridingprogramistocontactNARHA tolocatethenearestcenter.Callthecenterandhaveapreliminary discussionwithaninstructorortherapistaboutthecandidate’shistory .1 NARHA’s“Precautions&Contraindications”delineatephysicalconditions whichcouldpossiblyleadtoadverseeffectsfromriding.Guidelines set down specific safeguards to be followed, or stipulate if the candidateshouldnotride.2 Upondeterminationthatguidelinesaremet,thenewclientorfamily memberisadvisedtorequestadoctor’sreleasetoride,and,ifhippotherapy isindicated,aprescriptionforphysical,occupational,orspeech therapy.3 Thereispossibleinsurancecoverage,forwhichtheindividual companyshouldbequeried.Variousgrants,governmentandprivate, are offered. Information about availability, and qualification requirements ,canbeobtainedfromthecenterorNARHA.
