32 chapter ten “Friendly animals” Alittle orphan girl sat spinning at the foot of the ramparts , when suddenly a grass snake crawled out of a crack in the wall. Quickly she spread out her blue kerchief beside her, the kind that snakes love to sit on. When the snake saw that, it turned around and vanished, but soon came back, carrying a tiny gold crown, put the crown on the kerchief, and went away. The little girl picked up the glittering crown,which was made of finely spun gold. After a while the snake came a second time. When it saw that the crown wasn’t there any more, it crept back to the wall. Stricken with grief, it beat its head against the stone as long as its strength held out, and finally lay there dead. If the little girl had left the crown lying on the kerchief, the snake would probably have brought her more treasures from its hole. ...
