Acknowledgments The authors express their gratitude to several individuals who played critical roles in the publication of The Fenians. This work began as a master’s thesis entitled Green Americans and evolved into a dissertation called Erin’s Hope before it was presented to the University of Tennessee Press in its current format. Green Americans would not be somewhere in the Tisch Library stacks at Tufts University today without tremendous guidance from Professor John Brooke, now of The Ohio State University. Erin’s Hope, likewise, would have never been microfilmed for inclusion in the University of Michigan’s dissertation repository without three years of vigilant critique by Professor Kerby Miller. Professor Miller served as graduate advisor to both authors when they were PhD students at the University of Missouri. His influence is evident throughout this work and throughout Bryan McGovern’s previous publication, John Mitchell: Irish Nationalist, Southern Secessionist. The initial research for this book began before the advent of email and internet archive catalogs. Accordingly, content for Green Americans was largely collected through interlibrary loan and phone calls to friends in distant cities who generously offered to photocopy and mail noncirculating sources to Patrick. Patrick is particularly grateful to the following individuals: William Amberg, Tim Bromelkamp, James Caparas, Randy Ebertowski, Cheto Navarro, and Patrick Montgomery. Patrick also re-extends his thanks to everyone who provided assistance during the writing of Erin’s Hope: Patrick Brennan, R. V.
