AcknowLedtJments o many people contributed to the success of The Deaf Way and, therefore , to the possibility of this volume that it is impossible to name them all. However, the first word of thanks must go to all of the people at Gallaudet University who caught the vision and worked so hard to make it a reality. We also thank all of the presenters who shared their stories at The Deaf Way and then agreed to allow us to include them in this book. Many of the presenters overcame great obstacles to make their contribution. Putting the conference together was an expensive undertaking and we could not have accomplished it without the financial assistance of a number of organizations.The major sponsors, in addition to Gallaudet University, were AT&T and Ronald McDonald Children's Charities. Without their generosity, The Deaf Way would have been impossible . In addition, we are grateful to the following foundations and organizations for contributions that enabled presenters to travel to the conference: the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, the Inter-American Foundation, the Voluntary Fund for the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons, the Mason Perkins Fund, the German Marshall Fund, and Pan American World Airways. Carol Macomber of The French Connection (in Media, Pennsylvania) is to be commended for her many rapid, accurate translations of French papers and correspondence into English. On numerous occasions, C.A.S.A. and Ms. Macomber also translated correspondence from the editors to the authors. Silvia Golocovsky of Gallaudet 's International Center on Deafness not only translated Spanish correspondence into English, but also provided information vital for contacting foreign authors, particularly Latin American authors, when missing information or permissions were needed. Harry Markowicz from Gallaudet's English Department, helped contact French authors and also translated French correspondence into English. Bernard Mottez, from France, contacted French authors for needed biographical information, and Michel LaMothe xxii THE DEAF WAY ~ Acknowledgments provided materials needed for the completion of French papers and helped secure needed permission forms. Many of the papers in this volume are based partially or entirely on videotapes of signed presentations, for which either no paper or only a synopsis was provided. We wish to thank Jean Lindquist (who was an assistant coordinator of The Deaf Way) for applying her interpreting skills to the task of transcribing American Sign Language presentations into written English. In those cases where images from videotaped presentations were needed to illustrate papers, the technical assistance of Ron Reed of Gallaudet's Television Department and Chun Louie of Gallaudet's Department of Art and Photography were indispensable. Chun Louie also deserves credit for the majority of the photographs that appear in this book.
