Parents wishing to explore this technology need information and support . This book is a resource for parents trying to decide if a cochlear implant is right for their child. It answers many of the questions that parents have, and poses and answers some that they may not have considered. This book is written with the parent’s perspective in mind and attempts to present a balanced view of implantation:the process, procedure, and performance results. Chapter 1 outlines steps for beginning the process, highlighting important factors to consider when choosing an implant center . When parents have a choice in determining which center to select, they should assess numerous characteristics about the center before making their decision. These characteristics are detailed to help parents understand the complexities of center selection. A list of questions that parents can ask is also provided. Chapter 2 explores the candidacy evaluation, a critical point of entry into the process. Evaluation of children for implantation should be considered within the perspective of the whole child. This whole child perspective sets the stage for understanding performance outcomes after implantation.
