Acknowledgments An enterprise such as this analysis and synthesis of papers from the 1984 International Symposium on Cognition, Education, and Deafness can never become a reality without the significant involvement of many dedicated people. Inevitably, some of these people work almost invisibly; regrettably, they may not receive the proper acknowledgment. A great debt of gratitude is owed to Doreen Dixon for deliberate and precise work in word processing; Elaine Costello of Gallaudet Uf!.iversity Press for essential guidance and support; Ivey Pittle of Gallaudet University Press for painstaking, thorough, and intelligent editing of the entire manuscript ; Doin Hicks (Vice-President for Research at Gallaudet University) for encouragement and financial backing; and all of the obviously well-qualified contributors and analysts in this volume, withoutwhose work there would be only blank pages after this page. Careful and comprehensive notes of each symposium session were kept by a corps of hard-working graduate assistants. Their work proved to be essential to the contributors who analyzed each theme grouping of papers in this volume.
