2002 239 [copy of a FAX sent to Anhalt] 11 january 2002 Dear Isty, old friend, I’m sorry not to be able to be with you and Beate, your family and friends on this great day of your book launching, another marker in your long trek capped with recognition of your accomplishments in music which have earned you the love and respect and admiration of so many, myself included. So I greet you on this milestone occasion as a brotherin -spirit and send you warmest wishes and congratulations. [ … ] George 240 16 january 2002 My dear George, This interrupts your exciting work on your memoirs (a future exciting read for me, among other friends & admirers of yours) … just for a minute … I feel an urge to write this little report to you about the booklaunch that took place in the Queen’s U[niversity] Music Library on Friday last (the 11th) … It was a lively occasion … about 80–90 people were present (all contributors to the book but you, Robin Elliott who teaches in Dublin, Ireland , and Bill Benjamin who was unable to come from Vancouver—quite a distance & expense—and friends) … Surprise: 30 copies of the book| 399 were sold at this event, and I was busy with writing friendly words (names) in the copies. Gordon Smith was the master of ceremonies and he, after thanking sundry contributors to the book & the launch, continued by reading ‘messages,’ starting with your warm and ‘personal’ letter to me (a lovely text, my dear Friend, for which I am grateful/thankful to you, as on several similar occasions in the past when our friendship was reinforced by expressions of affection and mutual high regard ever so generously expressed), continuing with others. The event coincided with a display (in glass cupboards, etc. of documentation of my doings (scores, etc.) (see enclosure).1 Then there was food & drinks (hospitality of the School of Music) with music (2 flutes & keyboard) in the ‘background’ … After 7 p.m. friends and out-of-town visitors (inc[luding] Alan Gillmor) came to the house where there was more food & wine … The day ended for us at about midnight … It was a fine day.
