xv TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE As translator and editor, I would like to thank first Mario Geymonat for the opportunity to encounter the great Archimedes in a meaningful way through his Italian original , Il Grande Archimede. I would also like to thank my conscientious assistants Stephen Margheim, Ben Smith, and Faith Wardlaw, for their fine suggestions and careful attention to detail for the editing and translating of the volume . Mrs. Alex Tomecek and Mrs. Thelma Mathews were also wonderfully helpful with numerous important details.
