· 379 · ESSAY ON SOURCES When I first had the idea of writing a book on the early history of ACC basketball, the question that immediately arose in my mind was whether documentary evidence would be available on the topic. My initial trip to the University Archives at the University of Maryland, near my home, erased any doubts about the volume and the richness of primary sources. I found correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports of games, information on NCAA investigations, clippings, photographs, and other wonderfully illuminating material. It was at that point that I decided that a scholarly history of ACC basketball, based in part on archival research, was possible and, indeed, exceedingly promising. Subsequently, when I conducted research at the university archives of every other school that was a member of the ACC between 1953 and 1972, my experience at Maryland was repeated. I found an abundance of useful and fascinating documentary evidence that is on display in the notes of this book. The materials I cite were helpful in tracing various aspects of the ACC’s history, but they were particularly valuable in understanding the relationship between academic and athletic objectives at every conference school in the period I cover. Books and articles written by scholars and journalists were also essential for writing this volume. The work of the scholars cited in the notes placed my research in a broad context of the history of college athletics, southern history and culture, and the development of conference universities.The work of journalists who covered the ACC gave me information that is seldom available in archives about coaches, players, and individual games.Their reports of events they witnessed and principals they interviewed provided perspectives that would otherwise be impossible to obtain for a historian trying to reconstruct what occurred decades before. For the same reasons, I also benefited from the memoirs of former coaches. Memoirs must always be used with caution, but they offer unique and important insights. As with primary sources, even a cursory look at the notes in this book will reveal my indebtedness to other writers who have examined different segments of the rich and fascinating history of ACC basketball. Finally, I am deeply grateful to the coaches, players, administrators, journalists, and scholars who gave generously of their time to talk to me. They provided information, judgments, contacts, and great stories. They shared their memories and knowledge in a frank and friendly way, and best of all, expressed great interest in my project.
